Week of Sept. 14 - Sept. 18
Hello to all my first and second grade friends! It has been so much fun getting to know all of you over the last week of school. Today we enjoyed our first Monday back! It was a very busy day with lots of new learning! Here is a little update on what we've been doing and what is to come for the rest of this week:
1st Grade
Reading: We have just begun learning about the Daily 5! Today, September 14th, we learned about our first Daily 5 Task: Read to Self . We learned that there are two ways to read a book:
1. Read the pictures
2. Read the words
Don't forget that if you can't read all of the words on the pages of a book, you can take a picture walk and "read" the pictures. I was so excited to see many of our first graders practice their stamina and work their hardest to get started right away, stay in one spot, and read the whole time! We will keep practicing Read to Self tomorrow and continue to work on our stamina. Later this week we will be placing everyone in their own reading groups. I can't wait to work with all of you and to see how much you already know!
Remember to read at home every night for 20 minutes.
Math: During Math today we were able to become "Math Detectives" and began learning about and using our Daily 3 Math Stations (Teacher Table, Math Tubs, Math on the Computer). At the teacher table we found all of the numbers "hiding" in 5, 6, 7, 8 using our 10s frames. Then we learned about how to use number bonds! I was so excited to see many of you pick up on new ideas and working hard as math detectives to find missing parts of a bond! We will be working with number bonds the rest of this week so keep those math detective hats on!
2nd Grade
Reading: Today during reading we learned about our first part of the Daily 5: Read to Self! Together we read a new book and talked about the different ways to "read":
1. Read the pictures
2. Read the words
Remember: If you can't read the words in a book, take a picture walk! It's so much fun to try and make up your own story based on the pictures illustrators have created for us. Later on we practiced our read to self stamina. So many of you were able to sit quietly and read the whole time! Later on, I got to work with a group of students in my classroom on our new story: Henry and Mudge: The First Book. We talked about some of our new vocabulary, read a brand new story, and practiced sight words with partners. I was so happy that all of you worked so hard and earned a "star student" treat at the end of reading.
Math : Today I got to work with you on addition facts and new vocabulary! Remember a few of our math vocabulary words: addend and sum. Each number you add is called an addend. The answer to your problem is the sum! We also learned that you can add numbers in any order and the sum will always be the same! (This is the Commutative Property of Addition). Everyone worked so nicely on their independent assignment. Tomorrow and throughout this week we will be practicing strategies that we can use to add and subtract.
Can't wait to see all of you tomorrow! : )
Parents: Feel free to e-mail me with any questions, comments, or concerns at my SSPP e-mail. I would love to hear from you!
